11 Fantastic Family Fun Activities in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Gone are the days of Cabo known only as a tropical hot spot for spring breakers and wild nightlife! More and more families are venturing to this this beautiful city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula – known for its beaches, water-based activities and plenty of family-friendly action. Here are 11 highlights of Cabo to check out when vacationing there with the kiddos.
Paddle & Snorkle! Families will enjoy sea kayaking in glass-bottomed boats. Paddle to a famous Cabo San Lucas snorkeling spot in a clear-bottom kayak. Cabo Expeditions offers guided tours in double kayaks where kids can ride with parents. Follow your guide along the beautiful shores of Land’s End where you will pass unspoiled beaches, breathtaking landscapes, and the famous Arch, Sea Lion Colony, and of course, Lover’s Beach.
Enjoy the Outdoor Zipline Adventure through the Boca de Sierra Biosphere Reserve on Mexico’s longest and fastet zipline. This obviously is for adventurous families who enjoy ziplining, climbing walls and rappeling. There is a minimum age, height and weight limit to ensure safety and fun for everyone.
Cabo Adventures offers several a wide selection of fun and interactive programs where families can experience the magic of swimming with the Cabo Dolphins. A few of the programs include Dolphin Encounter where kids are introduced to the Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin in shallow water and are able to feel their skin and communicate with hand signals. Another family favorite is Dolphin Kids, designed for children aged 4-9 so they can interact with the dolphins in the safe shallow area of the dolphin pool under close supervision.
Lover’s Beach is not just for lovers! Families can take a water taxi over from Médano Beach (Cabo’s best and safest family-friendly beach). The geography of Lovers Beach is very interesting and it is not as quiet and secluded as the name implies. Neptune’s Finger, a large rock that protrudes out of the sea, can be seen from this beach. The water taxi will take tour Land’s End to view the fish below then you will pass by the infamous El Arco, Cabo’s famous arch where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Parents keep in mind, there are no restrooms or showers on the beach and it is not shaded like other Cabo beaches so be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen.
5. Médano Beach
Medano Beach (Playa el Médano) or The Dune Beach is the main safe swimming beach in Cabo San Lucas and the most popular. Since it is the safest, it is considered the best beach for families. There are plenty of activities to choose from including swimming, jet skiiing, kayaking, waterskiiing, parasailing and of course building sandcastles with the kids!
Become a pirate for the day on the Buccaneer Queen. Set sail on this 96-foot long wooden ship built in 1968 in Corando, California and was designed as an exact replica of an ancient galleon pirate ship that sailed many years ago. With three different tours, daily excursions feature up-close looks at Land's End and Lover's Beach, as well as snorkeling adventures in the fish-rich waters of Chileno Bay. Kids will love watching the costumed crew perform sword fights and parents will love the open bar! Kids under six sail for free.
Whale watching in the winter months (Dec. 14- Apr. 14) on 4 different excursions on both covered whale watching boat tours or fast raft Zodiac style tours. Beautiful and educational experience for families including collecting data on the marine species you see and helping keep the oceans clean by collecting floating ocean trash on every tour. Kids under 6 are free.
8. El Arco
Take a water taxi out to see The arch of Cabo San Lucas. El Arco is located at the southern tip of Cabo where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. The limestone arch is a rock formation jutting out of the sea created by the rough winds and seas over time. El Arco is inaccessible by land but a water taxi is the perfect means of viewing the beautiful landmark, which is a haven for sea lions. The kids will enjoy asking the water taxi driver to “Take me to Land’s End please!” (Land’s End is another name for it.)
Take an ATV tour and explore the natural beauty of Los Cabos. This tour takes you over fabulous trails into the desert, mountains, canyons, and streams to the breathtaking beaches of the Pacific Ocean. They also offer horse-riding once you get to the beach. For families, the best tour is the Side by Side Kids Adventure where the kids (10+) drive a Mini Side by Side next to you on this off-road but very safe trail. Children must be 7 years old to go on a tour and are able to co-pilot the older sibling driver!
Wild Wet Fun is off the beaten path in the small community of Caduano and is perfect for kids of all ages. The water park includes slides for all ages, a replica pirate ship a water bucket that fills and dumps, kiddie pools and slides, adult slides and relaxing pools. There are bathrooms located throughout the property and plenty of shades areas with tables and chairs. Food and drink cannot be brought in, but concession items such as hamburgers, hot dogs, pizzas and chicken tenders are available. Wild Wet Fun is open seasonally, and generally only on weekends so call ahead.
Catch waves year long in Cabo! Take surf lessons from the professional instructors and be up and riding waves in no time. Kids and parents enjoy the lessons which include soft deck surfboard, shaded camp, refreshments and snacks and more.
