7 Reasons to Take a Family Trip to Costa Rica

share with friends:

Costa Rica may well be the perfect family adventure destination. If you are looking for family fun and relaxation and are ready to go international (without too much of the trouble), Costa Rica might be the spot for your next family vacation. Here we give you 7 reasons why Costa Rica is a fabulous family-friendly vacation spot.

1. Amazing Beaches

Looking for a real beach getaway for the family, beyond your normal summer trip? Costa Rica has tons of beautiful, natural beaches, each with a different vibe. There are epic waves for older kids – put them in surf school for a few days and watch them hang ten! You’ll also find quieter coves, perfect for the little ones to splash around and good for shell hunting too.

2. Adventures For All Ages

Active families will find tons to do in Costa Rica. The sheer beauty is an inspiration to get up and go! Visit active volcanoes or zipline through the rainforest canopy. Ride horses through the countryside and stop at a gorgeous waterfall to cool off. Laze the day away at natural hot springs or hike on suspension bridges in a cloud rainforest. The problem will be deciding what to do and what to leave until next time.

3. Nature Up Close

Imagine sitting outside for breakfast and watching monkeys in the trees above. Visit one of Costa Rica’s many animal sanctuaries – what fun for kids to see a real live sloth! You can also see iguanas, toucans, sea turtles, tropical birds and butterflies. Costa Rica is one of the most eco-friendly countries in the world. They are intent on conserving the biodiversity of their beautiful county. More than 25% of the country is designated as national parks and reserves. Kids can learn lots about nature conservation and animal welfare, all while on a trip of a lifetime!

4. Easy Escape

Costa Rica is a relatively easy trip from the U.S. (just over a 3 hour flight and in the same time zone as Houston). With two international airports and more and more flights serving the U.S., even flight prices have decreased in the last few years. It is easy for families to rent a car (and a car seat) or hire a driver to take you to your destination. Costa Rica may be a bit more expensive than most Central American countries, but the good tourism infrastructure makes the extra cost worth it for families who want the adventure without having to rough it. And its small size means you can go from lounging on the beach to hiking by a volcano to river rafting to splashing in waterfalls, all in one day!

5. Slow Living

Costa Ricans enjoy a slower pace of life than many of us. You’ll feel the difference as soon as you get off the plane. The people of Costa Rica (‘Ticos’) are in general very friendly and helpful. Families fit in well and are welcomed most everywhere. Settle into a different lifestyle while you are there and really take advantage of a restful and relaxing vacation. It is a place where it is just easy to ‘be’. Escape the rush of daily life and enjoy being on Tico time!

6. Fresh Food

Kids can live off the fresh tropical fruits here, and Costa Rican cuisine has something for even the pickiest of eaters. A traditional dish we find kids like is the ‘casado’, typically some type of meat or fish plus rice and black beans, plantains, salad and a tortilla. It is basic, good food that can be found at most restaurants. Add a fresh fruit juice or smoothie and the kids will be ready to go for the rest of the day. Tip: Costa Rican diners are called ‘sodas’. These are traditional breakfast/lunch restaurants, usually with outdoor tables, and you’ll find the best prices and most authentic atmosphere.

7. Make Memories

There is an expression: Life is only as good as the memories we make. A family trip to Costa Rica is an epic family adventure that you won’t forget anytime soon – you’ll come back with family memories and photos to die for. And we can almost guarantee that you’ll be dreaming of your next trip to Costa Rica before you get back home. Pura Vida! ("Pure life" and the law of the land in beautiful Costa Rica!)
